Description
NOTE: Although pre-booking has ended, there are places on all walks available so you can pay for your walk when you register. Registration takes place at the Lough Allen Hotel beginning at 09:00 on Saturday and Sunday.
Two day walking festival on Sliabh An Iarainn, Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim.

Saturday April 11th
Grade A Walk
Mass Rock Challenge
Registration: 9:00 - 9:45am Bus departs 10:00am sharp
Walk Overview: This walk begins at the Mass Rock in Ballinaglera and finishes at the Mass Rock in Aghacashel. The walk crosses the summits of Bencroy and Sliabh An Iarainn. Bus will collect walkers in Aghacashel and return to the Lough Allen Hotel.
Distance: 17.5km | Height Gain: 740m | Walking Time: 5 - 6 hrs
Grade B Walk
Rivers and Waterfalls
Registration: 9:00 - 9:45am Bus departs 10:00am sharp
Walk Overview: Starting in Ballinaglera, this walk takes in the rivers and waterfalls flowing down from Sliabh An Iarainn before crossing the summit of Sliabh An Iarainn and finishing in Aghacashel. Bus will collect walkers in Aghacashel and return to the Lough Allen Hotel.

Grade C Walk
Shannon Blue Way Walk
Registration: 10.00 - 10:45am Bus departs 11.00am sharp
Walk Overview: This is a family friendly walk along the newly opened Shannon Blue Way walk on the Battlebridge Loop.
Distance: 7km | Height Gain: none | Walking Time: 2 - 2.5 hrs

Grade A Walk
Iron Mountain Challenge 2
Registration: 9:00 - 9:45am Bus departs 10:00am sharp
Walk Overview: This walk will take in the views of Lough Allen and the Lakelands as you ascend up the west side of Sliabh An Iarainn, cross the summit and descend into Drumshanbo returning to the Lough Allen Hotel
Distance: 17km | Height Gain: 720m | Walking Time: 5 - 6 hrs
Grade B Walk
Sliabh An Iarainn Walk
Registration: 9:30 - 10:15am Bus departs 10:30am sharp
Walk Overview: This is a shorter version of the A walk and will also take in the views of Lough Allen and the Lakelands as you ascend up the west side of Sliabh An Iarainn, cross the summit and descend into Drumshanbo returning to the Lough Allen Hotel
Distance: 12km | Height Gain: 600m | Walking Time: 3.5 - 4 hrs
Grade C Walk
Mountain Road Walk
Registration: 10.00 - 10:45am Bus departs 11.00am sharp
Walk Overview: This is a walk along the mountain road on the east side of Sliabh An Iarainn and finishing in Ballinaglera. Bus will collect walkers in Ballinagleara Village at approximately 3.30pm and return to the Lough Allen Hotel.
Distance: 11.5km | Height Gain: Downhill Walk | Walking Time: 2.5 - 3 hrs
Guidelines for walkers
- Experienced guides will accompany all walks. The decision and authority of the leaders is final and at all times to be accepted by the participants.
- Choose the walk most suited to your level of fitness, if in doubt please consult walk leader.
- Please adhere to the Leave no Trace code of outdoor ethics.
Deciding which walk is for you
A Walks = Experienced walker - Strenuous
B Walks = Regular walker
C Walks = Family friendly walks
Clothing & Equipment
“A” and “B” walks are on open high rough country. Mountain boots are essential—no boots no walk; waterproof clothing required, no jeans
“C” Walks are on road and tracks, strong comfortable footwear is required, no jeans. Children are welcome but the trails are not suitable for buggies.
- Base point is at the Lough Allen Hotel in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim.
- Transportation will be provided to/from start/finish point where necessary.
- No dogs are allowed on any walks.
- Accommodation providers in the area are listed on Drumshanbo.ie and on facebook.com/drumshanbo.ie.
- All participants must register prior to all walks. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
- Those participating in the Walking Festival do so at their own risk.
- The organisers maintain the right to change the walks where deemed necessary.
- Walk Leaders maintain the right to refuse participation due to unsuitable clothing, footwear or lack of experience.
